Seven things to check before buying used

A short list you can work through yourself before paying anything.

A good check does not need a workshop. Start with the paperwork: clean registration, and a chassis number that matches it.

Then look at paint differences between the doors and the wings — the first sign of a past accident. Open the bonnet cold and look for leaks.

Finally: drive it on a road you know, with the radio off. Most problems can be heard before they can be seen.
